St. John River Flora Trip, Aroostook County, ME
We will meet for the trip at the bridge over the Aroostook River in Washburn, Aroostook County, ME at 1:30 pm on Friday. To reach this bridge from the south, take Interstate 95 north to Houlton (exit 302). This will place you on Route 1. Take this north toward Presque Isle, driving through the towns of Monticello, Bridgewater, and Mars Hill (now with a wind farm to the east on Mars Hill itself). In the town of Mars Hill, be sure to continue to follow Route 1 (do not take Route 1a). Follow Route 1 through the city of Presque Isle and over the Aroostook River. After crossing the bridge, look for Route 164 immediately on the left. Follow this, with the Aroostook River on the left, to Washburn. In approximately 17 km (ca. 10 miles) from leaving Route 1, you will see a bridge on your left. We will meet here, on the east side of the river, to make our way north to a northern white cedar swamp for the afternoon.
